Faculty Profile: Aurélien Farina

Aurélien Farina is a French-Swiss graphic designer born in 1984, primarily active in the fields of editorial and print design. His work focuses on interaction and playfulness as general design notions, using simple tools and processes, and considering that all graphic design creations are, indeed, graphic objects. In this perspective, his woks are often based on a modular, evolutive and user-oriented approach, in which the viewer/reader plays as important a role as the designer himself : whether using typography, shapes, images or materiality, the design is not meant to impose strict and static forms, but rather to propose open and dynamic setups, scenarios, possibilities. Letters can form many different words ; a sheet of paper can be folded, and unfolded in many different ways ; cards can be shuffled and re-arranged ; books can be turned upside-down or read in the dark.

Aurélien Farina studied at Sciences-Po Paris, where he graduated with a Master’s degree in Cultural Management, before studying graphic design at the HEAD-Geneva, where he teaches typography and editorial design since 2012. He founded the Paper! Tiger! studio in 2011, since then collaborating with a number of other designers and artists for graphic design projects and small-press publishing. Since 2014, Paper! Tiger! is based in a street-level shop in Paris (3rd arr.), open to co-workers, friends and visitors alike. Aurélien’s hopes for the future are : designing more posters ; creating children’s books ; thinking of something surprising every day ; (possibly) touching someone’s heart with design.
